The Wolayita region, which stretches east from Sidama, is one of the most thickly populated parts of the country, and overpopulation, along with the vagaries of an uncertain rainfall, has led to severe problems of soil erosion and intermittent famine. But like Sidama, Wolayita has a long and proud history. The last of their kings, the Kawa Tona, accepted Menelik, the ‘king of kings’, in 1894 only after a long and bloody struggle. Polygamy is a tradition in this region.

The next day was a Saturday, and when the storytellers arrived at the hotel after breakfast for another session, Yisahak wrinkled his nose at the prospect of spending more hours sitting on the rocks by the lake shore. Since we had a car, he said, we should get Dirije to us drive up to Yirgalem, a lovely place, not very far away. He would take us to a Wolayita village and show us the rural life of the people.

I saw Dirije’s eyes narrow with suspicion.

And, Yisahak added jauntily, he would have the chance to drop in and see his wife and baby son, who were staying up there on a long visit.

Dirije nodded, knowingly.
